Germany mandates military exemption proof for new Ukrainian refugees

Germany has implemented new requirements for newly arriving Ukrainian refugees of conscription age seeking temporary protection. According to the German Federal Ministry of the Interior, these individuals must now provide documentation proving they either have a legal exemption from military service or have departed Ukraine in compliance with military obligations.

This policy shift follows a decision by the Council of the European Union to extend temporary protection for those fleeing the war in Ukraine until March 4, 2028. However, the EU Council specified that protection should be granted to individuals who are fulfilling military duties in Ukraine when such obligations apply.

The new regulations specifically target new applicants; individuals who were already benefiting from temporary protection in a member state prior to the recent changes are not subject to these new restrictions. Those who fail to provide the necessary documentation or are found to be residing in Germany illegally may face deportation.
