Germany: Natural Methods to Control Garden Ants

Ants are common in German gardens, but large colonies can become a nuisance, damaging lawns and supporting aphids. While hot water can kill many ants and possibly the queen, it may also harm plant roots and be inhumane, so experts recommend gentler alternatives.

Effective home remedies include acidic sprays such as vinegar, strong-smelling spices like cinnamon, chili powder, and cloves, and aromatic herbs such as lavender, thyme, and marjoram. Lemon juice or peels, coffee grounds, and diluted tea‑tree oil are also used to disrupt ant scent trails. Preventive measures involve planting repellent herbs and ensuring the ant species is not protected, as some, like the Red Wood Ant, are under conservation law.
