Robert Koch-Institut study finds high rates of sleep deprivation in Germany
A study by the Robert Koch-Institut (RKI), published in the Journal of Health Monitoring, reveals that nearly 40 percent of adults in Germany sleep less than the recommended seven hours per night during the week. The findings, based on a representative telephone survey of over 8,000 adults conducted between May 2023 and February 2024, highlight significant demographic disparities.
Men are more frequently affected than women, with approximately 43 percent of men reporting insufficient sleep compared to 36 percent of women. The risk is highest among men aged 45 to 64, where 53 percent report sleeping less than seven hours. On weekends, the percentage of people getting insufficient sleep drops to approximately 23 percent.
Health experts warn that chronic sleep deprivation is linked to serious medical conditions, including high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, as well as mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Additionally, research suggests a connection between sleep quality and professional longevity; for individuals over 50, consistent sleep problems may reduce the number of years they remain in the workforce.
