Germany-Netherlands border integration grows through commuting

Cross-border commuting between Germany and the Netherlands is increasing, reflecting a growing integration of daily life across the border. According to data from the Dutch statistics office CBS, approximately 46,600 people living in Germany worked in the Netherlands in 2024, up from roughly 40,200 four years prior.

Most German commuters work in border regions such as North Limburg, Twente, Arnhem, and Nijmegen. In North Limburg, the proportion of cross-border commuters reached 7.0 percent in 2024. While administrative and legal systems remain separate, the practical boundaries are fading as residents integrate shopping, work, and leisure activities across both nations.

Beyond labor mobility, cultural habits such as the widespread use of bicycles for commuting and errands are notable. The Dutch cycling culture, which utilizes cargo bikes for transporting children and goods, serves as a practical alternative to car use and is often observed by visitors from Germany.
