Germany nursing home costs place financial strain on families

High costs for residential nursing care in Germany are placing significant financial strain on families. According to data from the Association of Substitute Health Insurance Funds (vdek), the average monthly out-of-pocket contribution for inpatient care exceeded 3,300 euros in July 2026.

Costs can escalate further through 'additional services' (Zusatzleistungen). Under § 88 SGB XI, nursing homes may charge for services that exceed necessary standard care, such as special comfort amenities or extra caregiving. These must be agreed upon in writing and cannot compromise essential care services.

The financial burden is particularly acute for those requiring specialized care. In one documented case in Stuttgart, a woman with early-onset dementia required a placement costing approximately 6,500 euros per month, leaving her family to cover roughly 4,200 euros monthly after insurance benefits. Such expenses can rapidly deplete long-term savings, especially when dementia affects individuals before retirement age.
