Germany broadcasting fee exemptions for students and disabled persons

In Germany, certain groups are eligible for exemptions or reductions regarding the mandatory broadcasting fee (Rundfunkbeitrag), which is currently set at 18.36 Euro per month per household.

Individuals with disabilities may qualify for a reduced rate of 6.12 Euro per month if they meet specific criteria. This includes people with a degree of disability (GdB) of at least 80 with the 'RF' marker in their disability ID, or blind/visually impaired individuals with a GdB of at least 60 and the 'RF' marker. The 'RF' marker serves as official proof of the specific impairments required for the reduction.

Additionally, thousands of people, including approximately 9,000 students receiving BAföG, have become eligible for full exemptions. Other groups entitled to apply for exemption include recipients of Bürgergeld, social assistance, basic security, asylum seeker benefits, and vocational training assistance. It is important to note that these exemptions are not automatic; individuals must submit a formal application and provide supporting documentation, such as a BAföG notice, to the ARD, ZDF, and Deutschlandradio contribution service.
