Germany parking regulations: Fines for scooters and machine errors

Drivers and scooter riders in Germany face potential fines due to common misunderstandings of parking regulations. According to the ADAC, motor scooters are subject to the same parking requirements as cars. Parking on sidewalks is generally prohibited unless explicitly permitted by signage, even if the vehicle does not obstruct pedestrians. Violations can result in fines starting at 55 euros, increasing to 70 euros and a penalty point if pedestrians are obstructed.

Additionally, motorists often misinterpret rules regarding defective parking machines. If a parking meter is broken, drivers are not automatically permitted to use a parking disc. They are expected to search for a functioning machine within a reasonable distance, often cited as a rule of thumb of approximately 150 meters. Only if no working machine is available in the immediate vicinity may a parking disc be used to limit parking time.
