Germany plans 12 billion euro long-range missile arsenal

Germany is planning to develop a new long-range missile arsenal estimated to cost nearly 12 billion euros. According to internal Ministry of Defense documents, the initiative aims to bolster deterrence against Russia by providing the Bundeswehr with the capability to strike military targets—such as command centers, airfields, and logistics hubs—hundreds or even thousands of kilometers behind the front lines.

The program is structured into four distinct phases. The first phase focuses on the rapid procurement of cost-effective, mass-producible cruise missiles, with potential candidates including the Anthem missile from Covenant Industries, as well as Ukrainian-linked systems such as BARS and Flamingo. The second phase involves the acquisition of American Tomahawk cruise missiles and Typhon launch systems, intended to serve as a transitional capability by the end of the decade.

The final stages involve high-tech, long-term development in partnership with the United Kingdom. This collaboration aims to produce advanced cruise missiles and hypersonic glide vehicles with ranges exceeding 2,000 kilometers, expected to be operational by the mid-2030s. The strategy is designed to maintain a conventional response capability that remains below the nuclear threshold. The full program remains subject to approval by the German Bundestag.
