Germany to Fine Airlines €1,332/t for Insufficient Sustainable Aviation Fuel
The German Federal Ministry of Transport has drafted legislation to enforce the EU ReFuelEU Aviation rules on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airlines that fall short of the mandated SAF blending ratios will face a charge of €1,332 per tonne of missing SAF, with the Luftfahrtbundesamt responsible for monitoring compliance and able to impose fines of up to €50,000 for reporting breaches. The SAF quota starts at 2 % in 2025, rises to 5 % in 2030 and is set at 70 % by 2050. Because SAF is considerably more expensive than conventional kerosene, the measure could lead to higher ticket prices. The German Airlines Association welcomed the lack of a national “special path” and suggested that any revenue be used to support alternative fuels rather than the general budget.
