Germany plans to integrate AI into military operations

The German military is evaluating approximately 30 artificial intelligence (AI) tools intended to accelerate decision-making processes on the battlefield. Vice Admiral Thomas Daum, head of the German military's Cyber Command, indicated that a prototype could be ready by the second quarter of 2027, with full implementation expected by 2028.

The initiative follows lessons from the war in Ukraine, which highlighted the critical role of drones and satellites in generating massive amounts of data. AI is viewed as a necessary tool to process and analyze this information more rapidly than human operators.

While many of the systems under consideration are being developed by German companies, the French firm ChapsVision is also involved in the competitive process. Notably, Germany has decided not to purchase the Maven Smart System, a platform developed by the American company Palantir Technologies that is currently used by the United States, NATO, and several allies. European concerns regarding such American technologies often center on the risk of technological dependency and maintaining sovereignty over data.
