Germany poised to host 2029 Tour de France Grand Départ

Germany has emerged as the leading candidate to host the Grand Départ of the 2029 Tour de France. The bid, coordinated by Berlin and the states of Saxony, Saxony‑Anhalt and Thuringia, highlights the historic symbolism of the 40th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme described the proposal as a “tempting project” and noted its potential to celebrate freedom and Franco‑German friendship.

The German candidature, already official, is favored over offers from Slovenia and the Czech Republic. A decision on the host is expected by early 2027. Organisers also confirmed the return of the iconic Col du Granon climb to the race route for 2027 or 2028, adding further appeal to the German proposal.
