Germany praised by Pentagon for rapid defense spending increase

The United States Department of Defense has formally commended Germany for its rapid increase in defense spending and its commitment to NATO obligations. In a statement to the US Senate Armed Services Committee, Pentagon Under Secretary Elbridge Colby described Germany's shift from demilitarization to rearmament as a 'historical change' and an 'extraordinary tectonic shift'.

Germany is noted as a model for NATO allies, particularly regarding its efforts to meet defense commitments well ahead of the 2035 deadline. The country aims to reach a total defense spending target of 5 percent of its GDP by 2029. This includes the 3.5 percent allocated for defense and an additional 1.5 percent for defense-related infrastructure, as agreed upon by NATO members following the summit in The Hague.

Beyond spending, the Pentagon highlighted Germany as a leading example for closer cooperation in arms production. This follows a memorandum of understanding signed by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. For 2026, Germany has planned a defense budget of 82.7 billion euros in its regular budget, supplemented by 25.5 billion euros from special funds.
