Germany gas storage levels hit historical low FAST-MOVING

German gas storage levels have reached a historical low for this time of year, currently sitting at approximately 50 percent capacity. This is significantly lower than the 67 percent recorded during the same period last year.

Industry association Ines reports that even if currently booked capacities, which stand at 78 percent, were fully filled by winter, the volume might still be insufficient to ensure supply during periods of extremely low temperatures. Economic incentives for storage are currently limited, as gas procurement costs frequently exceed the expected selling prices for the winter.

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs has stated that a gas shortage is not expected for the upcoming winter based on current knowledge, noting that supply security relies on multiple sources including pipelines from Norway, LNG import terminals, and neighboring European countries. However, consumer advocates and political figures have warned that low storage levels and high market prices could lead to increased costs for private households and industry.
