Germany receives P-8 Poseidon; Israel weighs purchase amid Turkish naval rise

Germany became the eighth operator of Boeing’s P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft after receiving its first three P-8A units in 2025. Boeing highlighted the delivery at the Farnborough Airshow, noting a global fleet of 178 aircraft that have logged more than 730,000 flight hours. German crews have already deployed the new jets to India, the United Kingdom’s RAF Lossiemouth and Norway, emphasizing the platform’s role in anti‑submarine warfare, surveillance and search‑and‑rescue missions.

Separately, Israeli defence officials are evaluating the acquisition of a P‑8 Poseidon to address what they see as an expanding Turkish submarine capability in the Eastern Mediterranean. The aircraft’s fly‑away cost is estimated at roughly $328.5 million per unit, and a purchase would make Israel the 12th P‑8 operator. The move reflects heightened regional maritime security concerns involving Turkey, Iran and other actors.
