Germany‑Israel maritime defence cooperation

In late July 2026 Germany expanded its maritime surveillance capacity by taking delivery of three Boeing P‑8 Poseidon patrol aircraft, becoming the eighth operator of the type. The acquisition was highlighted alongside reports that Israel was weighing a similar purchase to counter a perceived Turkish submarine build‑up in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The following day Germany approved almost €800 million in arms export licences to Israel, the bulk of which relate to a major maritime project identified by analysts as the Dolphin II‑class submarine INS Drakon built by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. The licences also accompany a memorandum of understanding between the German shipbuilder and Israel’s Elbit Systems for future collaboration.
