Germany records 2,832 road deaths in 2025, up 62 from previous year

Germany’s Federal Statistical Office reported 2,832 people died in road traffic accidents in 2025, an increase of 62 deaths compared with 2024 and roughly equal to the 2023 figure. On average eight people were killed each day, with 135 sustaining severe injuries and 882 sustaining light injuries.

The year saw about 371,000 injured road users (322,000 light injuries and 49,200 serious injuries) and 2.52 million police‑recorded accidents, a 0.4 % rise over 2024. The most common cause of fatal crashes was excessive or inappropriate speed. Alcohol‑related crashes fell slightly to 34,800 incidents, resulting in 170 deaths and 17,900 injuries. Child fatalities rose to 74 and senior deaths increased by 14 to 1,115, together accounting for a large share of the toll. Most deaths occurred on rural roads (56 %), with the remainder in urban areas (34 %) and on highways (10 %).
