Germany records highest electricity prices among G20 nations

Germany has recorded the highest electricity prices among G20 nations, according to a recent analysis by Verivox based on Global Petrol Prices data for the second quarter of 2026. German households pay an average of 35.6 cents per kilowatt-hour, which is more than double the G20 average of 16.3 cents.

While Germany ranks highest within the G20, it sits fourth globally behind Ireland, Bermuda, and Belgium. In comparison to other major economies, German prices significantly exceed those in Italy (34.5 cents), the United Kingdom (32.4 cents), and France (23.3 cents). The gap is even wider when compared to the United States (18.3 cents) and China (6.7 cents).

The high cost is attributed to the composition of the electricity bill, with more than 60 percent consisting of taxes, levies, and grid fees. This follows years of energy transition policies and the phase-out of nuclear power. Despite government promises made in late 2025 to lower costs, the economic burden on households and industries remains a significant concern.
