Germany reduces fossil fuel electricity use and repurposes nuclear site
Germany has significantly reduced its reliance on fossil fuels for electricity generation. According to Destatis, fossil fuel consumption dropped from 174,600 million kWh in the first half of 2018 to 94,200 million kWh in the first half of 2026.
Renewable energy sources accounted for 59.1% of Germany's electricity production between January and June 2026, a 6.5% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Wind power remains the primary individual source, increasing by 12.3% to reach 67,700 million kWh. While coal production saw a slight decrease of 0.5%, it remains the second most important source at 21.4%.
In a move to further support the energy transition, the former Isar II nuclear power plant in Bavaria is slated for repurposing. The investment firm Advisum plans to convert the site into a massive battery storage facility with a capacity of up to 900 MW. This project aims to stabilize the local grid by storing excess solar energy, which is abundant in the Bavarian region, and releasing it when demand increases.
