Germany renewable energy projects face economic challenges

Renewable energy projects in Germany are facing significant economic challenges. Due to deteriorating economic conditions, several wind and solar projects are being abandoned, halted, or recalculated for 2026. In the wind power sector, average award values dropped by approximately 26 percent within a year, falling from 6.83 cents per kilowatt-hour in May 2025 to 5.06 cents in May 2026. This decline is driven by high competition for auction volumes.

These lower revenues, combined with high lease costs, financing expenses, and development costs, have made projects unviable. Notable examples include ABO Energy withdrawing its Märkerwald-Dierdorf wind farm project. Other companies, such as Statkraft, RheinEnergie, and AggerEnergie, have also canceled planned solar parks.

While electricity generation from renewables reached 55 percent in 2025, full decarbonization requires addressing the heat and transport sectors, which account for four-fifths of final energy demand. Achieving this would require massive infrastructure, such as thousands of wind turbines to replace fossil fuels for industrial processes, aviation kerosene, and district heating.
