Germany replaces fixed border checkpoints with mobile units

German authorities are replacing fixed border checkpoints on several motorways, including the A3 which connects to the Dutch A12, with unpredictable mobile units. This strategic shift aims to minimize disruption for residents and commuters in border regions.

Since the implementation of border controls in 2024 to reduce migration, the area has faced chronic traffic congestion and an increase in drivers using local village routes to bypass queues. These conditions have led to significant safety concerns, including reports of over ten injuries and four fatalities in accidents near the border.

Local leaders, including the Mayor of Montferland, Anne-Marie Fellinger, have welcomed the change, noting that fixed controls caused significant nuisance for residents and businesses. While the German Federal Police will continue border monitoring through March 2027, they will now utilize both uniformed and plainclothes officers at various locations and times rather than maintaining permanent stations.
