Germany replaces Marder vehicles with Puma for NATO mission

The German Marder infantry fighting vehicle has failed to integrate with the new D-LBO digital communication system during operational testing at the Munster proving grounds. The incompatibility stems from the Marder’s 1970s-era analog components, which cannot interface with modern digital radio technology used for crew and troop communications.

As a result, the 37th Panzergrenadier Brigade will proceed with its upcoming NATO mission without the Marder formation. Instead, two battalions will be equipped with the newer Puma combat vehicles, including the 112th Panzergrenadier Battalion from Bavaria. The brigade is intended to serve as a rapid reaction force supporting the defense of Lithuania and is expected to be digitally manageable by January 2027.

The D-LBO program is an 11.5 billion euro initiative designed to digitally connect over 10,000 military vehicles and platforms. While Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that the “D-LBO system works” and has been tested under realistic conditions, he acknowledged that industry has not re-equipped as many vehicles as originally agreed, leading to delays for approximately 300 vehicles.
