German Bundeswehr Puma IFV integration

Overview

The German Army has begun receiving the first Puma infantry fighting vehicles (IFV) from a second production batch. Delivered in the S1 configuration by the PSM joint venture, these vehicles are intended to modernize armored infantry units and replace the aging Marder IFVs.

However, operational testing at the Munster proving grounds revealed that the Marder vehicles failed to integrate with the new D-LBO digital communication system due to incompatible analog components. Consequently, the 37th Panzergrenadier Brigade will deploy to a NATO mission in Lithuania using Puma combat vehicles instead of the Marder formation. While the D-LBO program aims to digitally connect over 10,000 platforms, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius noted that delays in industry re-equipping have affected approximately 300 vehicles.
