The German Life Saving Society (DLRG) has reported a significant rise in drowning deaths during the recent summer bathing season. While the total number of water-related fatalities since the beginning of the year stands at 320—slightly lower than the previous year's 328—the number of deaths occurring specifically during the bathing season (May to mid-September) rose to 248, which is 12 more than the same period in 2025.

June was identified as the most critical month, with at least 101 fatalities recorded, a figure not seen since 2003. This spike is attributed to prolonged heatwaves driving large crowds to bodies of water. Regional data shows varying trends: Bavaria recorded 61 deaths, North Rhine-Westphalia saw 54, and Baden-Württemberg had 35. Conversely, states like Brandenburg and Thuringia reported fewer deaths compared to the previous year.

DLRG President Ute Vogt expressed particular concern regarding young men aged 11 to 30, who account for 88 of the year's fatalities. According to the DLRG, over 90 percent of victims in this age group were male. Vogt cited carelessness, overconfidence, and a lack of swimming proficiency as primary factors. The organization is calling for increased investment from federal, state, and local governments in swimming instruction and the modernization of swimming pool infrastructure to prevent future tragedies.
