Overview

Despite these preventative measures, the German Life Saving Association (DLRG) reported a rise in drowning fatalities during the summer bathing season. While total annual water-related deaths decreased slightly to 320, 248 people drowned between May and mid-September, marking an increase of 12 deaths compared to the same period in 2025. June was identified as the deadliest month with at least 101 fatalities, a level of mortality not seen since 2003, driven by heatwaves and large crowds.

Regional data indicates that Bavaria recorded 61 deaths, North Rhine-Westphalia saw 54, and Baden-Württemberg had 35, while Brandenburg and Thuringia reported fewer deaths than the previous year. DLRG President Ute Vogt identified a concerning trend among young males aged 11 to 30, who account for 88 of the year's fatalities. With over 90 percent of victims in this age group being male, Vogt attributed the deaths to recklessness, overconfidence, or a lack of swimming proficiency. In response, Vogt has called for greater government investment in swimming instruction and the repair of aging swimming pool infrastructure.
