Germany increases revocation of protection status for Syrians

The German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) has reported a significant increase in the revocation of protection status for Syrian refugees. In the first half of 2026, 23.2 percent of 8,320 reviews resulted in the revocation or withdrawal of refugee status or subsidiary protection. This marks a sharp rise compared to 2025, when only 3.7 percent of Syrian refugees lost their status, and 2024, when the rate was 3.1 percent.

This trend is attributed to the changing political and security situation in Syria following the departure of President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. Bamf has expanded its review activities to include individuals whose asylum procedures have exceeded 21 months and those whose cases were compelled by court decisions.

Simultaneously, there has been a notable increase in voluntary departures. In the first half of 2026, 9,276 people returned to their home countries through federal return programs, up from 7,348 during the same period in 2025. The REAG/GARP program provides financial incentives, including flight costs and a 'start-up aid' of 1,000 euros for adults and 500 euros for children, to encourage voluntary repatriation.
