Germany sees modest rise in unemployment among university graduates
Registered unemployment among people with academic qualifications in Germany has been climbing since 2022. The unemployment rate for this group reached 3.3 % in 2025, the highest level in a decade, yet it remains close to the threshold for full employment (around 3 %). While the overall figure stays low, the trend marks a shift from the near‑zero unemployment that existed up to 2024.
In the Rhineland town of Dormagen, the situation mirrors the national pattern. In June 2026, 6.1 % of academics aged 25‑40 were unemployed, only slightly below the town’s overall unemployment rate of 6.5 %. Labour‑market officials attribute the rise to a weaker economy, but note that academic job seekers still fare better than those without post‑secondary training.
Experts warn that the increase, though modest, signals a weakening labour market for highly educated workers, even as the absolute number of affected individuals remains small.
