Germany sees rise in conscientious objection trends

In Germany, there is a significant shift in conscientious objection trends. Data from the Federal Office for Family and Civil Society Tasks (BAFzA) indicates that the number of people withdrawing their applications for conscientious objection is rising. In the first eight months of the year, 570 such withdrawals were recorded, a figure projected to reach 855 by year-end, exceeding the 781 withdrawals in the previous year.

Simultaneously, the number of new conscientious objection applications has surged. By the end of August, 12,102 applications had been submitted, more than tripling the total for the previous year. Officials attribute this spike to geopolitical developments, including the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the Military Service Modernization Act (WDModG). Under the proposed modernization, mandatory medical screenings for young men are expected to begin in July 2027.
