Germany sees rise in electric micro-mobility accidents
Accidents involving electric micro-mobility devices are increasing in Germany. In Rhineland-Palatinate, e-scooter fatalities have reached a record high of four this year, with a significant rise in injuries. Data from the State Statistical Office shows that injuries from e-scooter accidents increased by more than 54 percent in the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2025.
Experts attribute the rise to the growing popularity and widespread use of e-scooters, particularly among users aged 14 and older. To improve safety, new German regulations (StVZO § 67) implemented in June 2024 now permit the installation of turn signals on all bicycles, including e-bikes and gravel bikes. This change aims to minimize accident risks by allowing riders to signal turns without removing their hands from the handlebars.
Manufacturers like Busch+Müller are offering retrofit solutions, such as the Turntec blinker, which can be connected to e-bike batteries to provide clearer signaling for riders.
