Germany sees surge in battery storage capacity

Germany has experienced a significant acceleration in the expansion of battery storage capacity. According to data from the Federal Network Agency analyzed by the German Solar Association (BSW-Solar), more than 500,000 new battery storage units with a total capacity of approximately 8.2 gigawatt-hours (GWh) were commissioned in the first nine months of 2026.

This represents a 91 percent increase in newly installed capacity compared to the same period in the previous year. The growth is primarily driven by large-scale storage systems, which saw their expansion increase by approximately 350 percent to around 3.8 GWh during this period. BSW-Solar expects total annual additions to exceed 10 GWh.

Despite this growth, industry experts and scientists suggest that the pace must increase further. Fraunhofer researchers have calculated that an additional four to five times the current amount of flexibility must be developed annually by 2030 to integrate renewable energy into the power system cost-effectively. To address investment barriers, BSW-Solar has proposed 15 reforms to accelerate expansion.
