Germany sees surge in war‑objector status withdrawals, 2025 record

The Federal Office for Family and Civil Society Tasks (BAFzA) reported that the number of people who revoke their war‑conscientious objection in Germany has risen sharply. 536 withdrawals were recorded in 2023, 626 in 2024, and 781 in 2025 – the highest figure to date. In the first half of 2026, 402 withdrawals were logged, which would translate into a new yearly record if the trend continues.

The total pool of war‑objectors is also expanding rapidly: 1,079 in 2023, 2,249 in 2024, 3,879 in 2025, and an estimated 5,862 in the first half of 2026. A revocation only requires a simple written declaration with a signature. Legally, a person who withdraws their objection is no longer classified as a war‑objector and would be subject to the full conscription duty should the military draft be reinstated or a state of tension arise.
