Germany Sets 2027 Deadline for Driver’s Licence Renewal

Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport is continuing a nationwide licence‑exchange programme that began in 2022 and will run until 2033. About 42 million German driver’s licences must be replaced with the new EU‑standard plastic cards to improve security and enable uniform checks across the European Union. Under the schedule, holders whose licences were issued in 2002, 2003 or 2004 must exchange them by 19 January 2027. The exchange costs €25.30, with an optional €5.10 fee for direct mail delivery, and no additional health or driving tests are required. Missing the deadline is an administrative offence punishable by a €10 fine, with higher penalties for repeat violations.

The swap follows EU directive 2006/126/EG, which requires all member states to complete the transition by 19 January 2033. The reform builds on a century‑long evolution of German driver’s licences, from early regional certificates to today’s digital‑ready EU format.
