Germany-Russia trade collapses as imports drop 96%

Economic ties between Germany and Russia have drastically declined following the invasion of Ukraine. According to data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), German imports from Russia in the first half of 2026 fell by 96.4% compared to the same period in 2021. The value of imports plummeted from 15 billion euros to just 0.5 billion euros, primarily due to the cessation of oil and gas deliveries. Remaining imports consist mainly of food, animal feed, metals, and chemical products.

German exports to Russia also saw a significant reduction, totaling 3.4 billion euros in the first half of 2026, which is approximately one-quarter of the volume recorded in H1 2021. Pharmaceutical products accounted for 42.4% of these exports.

Corporate presence has also diminished. In 2024, 76 companies in Germany were controlled by Russian parent companies, generating 8.4 billion euros in revenue, down from 229 companies and 25.4 billion euros in 2021. Similarly, the number of German companies active in Russia fell from 481 in 2021 to 290 in 2024, with annual turnover dropping from 38 billion euros to 13 billion euros.

Passenger numbers have also collapsed. Due to EU flight bans, direct passenger traffic from German airports to Russia fell to 39,900 in the first half of 2026, compared to approximately 1 million in the first half of 2019.
