Germany start-up sector sees record growth amid regional disparities
Germany is experiencing a surge in its start-up sector, with a record number of new companies founded since the beginning of the year. This growth has led to ten new unicorns—start-ups valued at over $1 billion—bringing the national total to 39. However, this growth is geographically concentrated, with 30 of these unicorns located in Berlin or Munich.
In Hamburg, the CDU faction has criticized the local government for failing to support start-ups during the scaling phase. While Hamburg remains Germany's third-largest start-up hub, it currently hosts only one unicorn, 1KOMMA5°, and failed to produce any of the ten new unicorns recorded this year. Critics argue that while early-stage founding is supported, a lack of growth capital prevents local companies from reaching market leadership.
In contrast, the state of Hessen has announced its 'Hessen 2030' strategy to aggressively expand its ecosystem. The state aims to increase annual start-up foundations from 270 in early 2026 to 450 per year by 2030. Additionally, Hessen plans to raise its annual start-up financing volume from 190 million euros to 500 million euros by 2030, focusing on accelerating the transition from academic research to marketable products.
