Germany Starts Construction of A14 Autobahn Segment Between Wittenberge and Karstädt

Construction began on the final 18‑kilometre section of Germany’s A14 autobahn between Wittenberge and Karstädt in Brandenburg. Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder attended the groundbreaking. The project includes 23 new bridges, three kilometres of noise‑reduction walls, wildlife crossings and a planned service area. Funding for the segment is about €316 million, and the route is expected to carry roughly 12 500 vehicles per day, relieving federal roads B189 and B5.

The new stretch links the existing network in Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern with the ongoing extension around the Elbe crossing. The overall A14 extension, running from Magdeburg to Schwerin, is projected to cost about €2.3 billion and be completed by 2032. A major Elbe bridge, 1 109 m long with a 3‑metre wide pedestrian and cycle path, is part of the same works; the federal government earmarks €120 million for it, with an expected opening in three years. The expansion aims to improve regional connectivity and attract residents and businesses to the Prignitz area.
