In major cities, costs are notably higher: Munich averages 800 euros per month, while Berlin and Hamburg average approximately 650 euros. While regions like Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt offer lower rates (between 358 and 372 euros), students are often restricted to specific university locations. Matthias Anbuhl of the German Student Union noted that the Bafög housing allowance, even with a planned increase to 440 euros in 2027, remains insufficient to cover market rates in most university towns.

Competition for affordable housing remains intense. For example, the Cologne Student Union provides roughly 5,000 dormitory spots, but only one-third of applicants successfully secure a room.
