Germany survey finds two‑thirds of workers consider moving abroad

A survey of about 1,000 full‑time employees in Germany commissioned by the job site Indeed shows that two‑thirds of respondents have thought about working abroad, and one‑third have taken concrete steps to explore opportunities. The United States, the United Kingdom and Switzerland are the most popular destinations, though interest in the United States is slipping. Higher‑earning households (monthly income above €6,000) are especially likely to look overseas, with roughly half of that group already applying for jobs abroad.

Motivations centre on higher pay and a better overall quality of life, cited by more than half of participants, while over 40 % cite lower taxes and social‑security contributions. Most respondents would prefer a temporary stay of several months to a few years rather than permanent emigration. Economist Virginia Sondergeld of Indeed commented, “When two‑thirds of the workforce have considered moving away, that should be seen as a sign of dissatisfaction with working conditions at home.” The findings suggest German employers and policymakers may need to improve labour conditions to retain talent.
