Germany targets technological sovereignty through AI and chip investments

Germany is intensifying its focus on artificial intelligence and digital technology through both government policy and regional industry events. During a cabinet meeting in Neuhardenberg, the federal government emphasized the need to strengthen innovation and competitiveness by increasing support for AI, semiconductors, and data centers.

Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil announced that investments in research and development from special funds are projected to increase by 60 percent in 2027 compared to 2026. The strategic goal is to promote ‘AI made in Germany’ and ‘Chips made in Germany’ to ensure technological sovereignty. Chancellor Friedrich Merz described AI as the ‘fourth industrial revolution,’ noting that the focus should be on specialized, practical applications for industry, medicine, and security rather than just developing the most powerful global models.

Parallel to these policy shifts, technological activity is expanding beyond Berlin into regional hubs. Events such as ‘data:unplugged’ in Münster, which attracts over 10,000 participants, and ‘Blackforestspace’ in Offenburg demonstrate the growing importance of regional tech communities in driving digital transformation and connecting technology providers with industrial users.
