North Rhine-Westphalia retail workers reach wage agreement
A breakthrough in collective bargaining has been reached in the retail sector of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Employers and the Verdi union agreed to a 25-month contract that includes a 3 percent wage increase starting in August 2026, followed by an additional 2 percent in May 2027. For lower pay groups, the minimum hourly wage will rise to 14.20 euros in 2026 and 14.90 euros in 2027. This agreement is expected to serve as a model for other regions in Germany.

However, economic uncertainty remains, with ongoing negotiations in sectors like the printing industry and calls from trade associations to reduce non-wage labor costs to maintain competitiveness.
