Germany: Thousands of teachers enter unemployment in 2026

Data from the German Federal Ministry of Labour reveals that thousands of teachers have entered unemployment this year, despite ongoing shortages in the education sector and poor PISA study results.

In August 2026 alone, 3,772 teachers transitioned from social security-liable employment to unemployment, with 545 of those cases occurring in Bavaria. This follows 1,771 teachers entering unemployment in July. Between January and August 2026, more than 9,200 teachers entered unemployment, while only approximately 3,400 left unemployment during the first half of the year.

Nicole Gohlke, a member of the Left Party in the Bundestag, criticized the trend as an ‘undignified practice of summer unemployment.’ She noted that while schools are desperately seeking specialists, many newly qualified and temporary teachers are being sent into unemployment during the summer holidays. Gohlke argued that education should be anchored in the Basic Law as a collective task to ensure permanent joint funding by the federal and state governments.
