Germany to fine men for ignoring military service questionnaires

The German Ministry of Defense has announced that it will initiate administrative proceedings against young men who fail to respond to military service readiness questionnaires. These individuals face fines of up to 250 euros if they do not reply within the initial four-week deadline and a subsequent two-week grace period.

Since January, the Bundeswehr has sent 492,800 questionnaires to individuals aged 18 and older to assess their willingness to serve. Of these, approximately 253,000 were sent to men, for whom response is mandatory, while 239,800 were sent to women and other genders on a voluntary basis. As of September 30, roughly 96 percent of men have responded on time.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to increase military readiness and prepare for potential defense requirements. While the current model focuses on voluntary service, the German government has indicated it may introduce a mandatory service requirement if recruitment goals are not met. The long-term objective is to expand the Bundeswehr to 260,000 active soldiers and 200,000 reservists by 2035.
