Germany to implement unified nursing assistant training in 2027

Germany is set to introduce a new, unified, and paid nursing assistant training program starting January 1, 2027. This reform, governed by the Nursing Assistant Act, will replace 27 different state-regulated assistant training models with a single, nationwide professional profile.

The Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) has developed a framework curriculum and training plan to guide this transition. These plans, which include a competence matrix to align classroom learning with practical application, will be provided free of charge to nursing schools and training providers. To support students during this transition, a new ombudsman office has become active in Lower Saxony to provide independent and free assistance to nursing trainees.

While the generalist nursing training path offers job security, it remains physically and emotionally demanding. Research involving over 500 trainees indicates a significant link between psychological resilience and stress levels. Students must balance rigorous vocational schooling—covering anatomy and legal frameworks—with practical rotations in hospitals and outpatient services, often involving shift work and high-pressure environments.
