Germany to increase defense spending to modernize Bundeswehr

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has emphasized the urgent need to modernize the Bundeswehr, stating that the nation's armed forces are currently not in the required state for self-defense. Merz argued that ensuring freedom and peace in Europe must remain a top priority, even if it requires significant defense expenditures.

The German federal government has outlined a multi-year plan to substantially increase military spending. Projections include 82 billion euros for 2026, 109 billion euros for 2027, 153 billion euros for 2028, and 162 billion euros for 2029. Merz noted that these investments aim to correct deficiencies accumulated over the last 15 years.

To improve economic efficiency, Germany is exploring cooperation with Ukraine, including the potential creation of joint defense enterprises to develop cost-effective military solutions. Additionally, the government is preparing a coordinated response with the EU and NATO regarding a recent drone incident involving explosives at Leipzig airport.
