European Union to implement digital identity wallets by 2027

The European Union is moving toward a standardized digital identity system, with the European Commission aiming for member states to provide digital identity wallets by the end of 2026. This initiative seeks to allow citizens to identify themselves, present documents, and access both public and private services through a single digital interface.

In Germany, the implementation will manifest as the ‘d-you’ app, scheduled to launch on January 2, 2027. Following the passage of the Digital Identity Act by the Bundestag, the app will serve as the national version of the European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet. Initially, the service will focus on the digital identity card, with plans to gradually integrate other documents such as driver's licenses and insurance certificates.

The rollout will initially include approximately 40 providers, including banks like Sparkasse, telecommunications companies like Vodafone, energy provider E.ON, and various municipal and academic institutions. While the digital wallet aims to streamline processes like opening bank accounts or verifying age, the use of the app will remain voluntary, and physical documents will not be abolished.
