Germany to launch d-you digital identity app in 2027

The German Bundestag has passed the Digital Identity Act, establishing the legal framework for a digital identity wallet known as ‘d-you’. Scheduled to launch on January 2, 2027, the app is the German implementation of the European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet.

Initially, the free app will allow users to carry their national identity card digitally on their smartphones. The goal is to enable secure identification for online and in-person services, such as verifying age, concluding contracts, or opening bank accounts. Future updates are expected to include other documents like driver’s licenses and insurance certificates.

Approximately 40 launch partners are expected to support the rollout, including the Deutsche Post, various banks such as Sparkasse, utility providers like E.ON, and telecommunications company Vodafone. Educational institutions, including the Free University of Berlin and Technical University of Munich, are also involved. Additionally, the HTWD has developed a digital student ID for use within the wallet, facilitating discounted access to municipal facilities in Dresden.
