Germany to offer driver's license subsidies for voluntary military service
Starting in 2026, individuals participating in voluntary military service in Germany will have a legal entitlement to subsidies for obtaining a driver's license. These financial incentives are designed to make military service more attractive to potential recruits.
Eligible participants can claim up to 3,500 euros for a passenger car license or up to 5,000 euros for a truck license (categories C or C1). However, the subsidy applies to only one type of license, not both. To qualify, service members must commit to a continuous 12-month period of military service and must have successfully passed their driving examination.
Specific timing requirements apply to the claims. For passenger car licenses, the license must be obtained within 12 months before the start of service or within 12 months after its conclusion. For truck licenses, the window for acquisition extends to 36 months after the completion of service. David Martens of the Bundesverband Lohnsteuerhilfevereine (BVL) notes that these subsidies are tax-free.
