Germany plans to purchase Ukrainian-developed Bars missiles

Germany is preparing to acquire a batch of Bars cruise missiles developed in Ukraine to expand its long-range strike capabilities. According to reports citing officials, an agreement could be finalized within the coming weeks. The initial deal would involve a small batch for technical trials by the Bundeswehr, scheduled for early 2027.

If these trials are successful, Germany may place follow-on orders for several hundred additional units. The Bars system, also referred to as ‘Schneeleopard’, is described as a hybrid between a cruise missile and an unmanned vehicle. It features jet propulsion, a range of up to 1,000 kilometers, and a payload capacity of up to 105 kilograms.

This potential acquisition marks the first known purchase of Ukrainian-developed offensive weaponry by the German military. The move is part of a broader effort by Berlin to strengthen European deterrence and modernize its arsenal through affordable, mass-producible technologies. Additionally, Germany is reportedly considering the purchase of the Anthem cruise missile produced by a US-based startup.
