Germany to reduce dental insurance subsidies from 2027
Starting January 1, 2027, statutory health insurance subsidies for dental prosthetics in Germany will be reduced. Patients without a complete dental bonus booklet or those who have not visited a dentist regularly will see their coverage drop to 50 percent of the costs. Even for those with consistent dental care, subsidies will decrease; for instance, a ten-year complete bonus booklet will result in a 65 percent subsidy rather than higher previous rates, increasing the out-of-pocket burden for patients.
In the field of pediatric orthodontics, families face significant financial challenges. While statutory insurance covers basic treatments for severe malocclusions that affect chewing, speaking, or breathing, it typically only covers traditional metal braces. Modern, more comfortable, or aesthetic treatment methods often require significant private payments, with total costs ranging between 1,850 and 6,500 euros. Experts recommend early planning and supplemental insurance to mitigate these costs.
