Germany to reintroduce mandatory health insurance notifications

German Health Minister Carsten Linnemann has announced plans to reintroduce a mandatory information requirement for statutory health insurance providers regarding planned contribution increases. The proposal aims to restore trust among insured members by ensuring they are notified of rate changes, which would allow them to exercise their special right of termination and evaluate alternative providers.

The previous removal of this obligation was part of a recent austerity package intended to reduce administrative costs and de-bureaucratize the healthcare system. Consumer protection groups, including the Federal Association of Consumers (VZBV), have welcomed the move, describing it as a long-overdue signal that empowers policyholders.

While the head of the GKV-Spitzenverband, Oliver Blatt, expressed openness to the return of the information duty, he cautioned against excessive bureaucracy. He emphasized that the implementation should utilize digital channels, such as insurance apps, to minimize administrative overhead and avoid unnecessary costs.
