Germany to replace fixed border controls with flexible patrols
Germany is transitioning from fixed border controls to a flexible inspection model on several highways to mitigate traffic issues. The new approach will involve mobile patrols at varying locations and times, rather than permanent checkpoints at crossings such as the A12, A7, and A37.
This decision follows significant criticism from Dutch border municipalities, including Zevenaar, Montferland, and Doetinchem. Local authorities and businesses reported that fixed controls led to daily traffic jams, increased transit through residential areas, and heightened road safety risks due to accidents in congestion.
While the method of enforcement is changing to be less predictable and more targeted, the German government maintains its commitment to border checks. These measures, originally implemented to combat irregular migration, have been extended until at least mid-March 2027.
