Germany to review protection status of Syrian refugees

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) plans to instruct the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) to conduct widespread reviews of the protection status of Syrian refugees this autumn.

The initiative, supported by CDU/CSU parliamentary experts, aims to revoke protection for specific groups, primarily focusing on single young men who are unemployed and receiving social benefits. In contrast, individuals with stable employment, such as doctors or nurses, may be offered the opportunity to transition to work-based residence permits.

To complement these reviews, the government intends to strengthen programs for voluntary return. Alexander Throm, the CDU/CSU spokesperson for internal policy, noted that voluntary departures are more cost-effective than forced deportations. The 2027 budget draft reportedly includes increased funding for these programs, with current premiums set at 1,000 euros per adult.
